The British oil and gas regulator announced on Wednesday (27) that it has authorized “development and production” at the controversial Rosebank field in the North Sea, angering environmental defenders.

The authorization was granted this Wednesday by the North Sea Transition Authority “after accepting the project’s environmental declaration and taking into account considerations related to the objective of carbon neutrality”, according to the regulator in a statement.

A week after announcing the postponement of several emblematic measures of the United Kingdom’s environmental policy, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak “has once again demonstrated that it benefits oil companies to the detriment of the population”, highlighted the NGO Greenpeace in a statement.

A “morally obscene” decision, said Caroline Lucas, of the Green Party, on X (formerly Twitter).

“This will not improve energy security or reduce divisions, but it will break our climate commitments and destroy the UK’s global leadership” in the energy transition, he highlighted.

The Norwegian state company Equinor and its counterpart Ithaca -a subsidiary of the Israeli Delek-, which will jointly explore this field located in front of the Shetland Islands, in the north of Scotland, separately announced an investment of 3.8 billion dollars (18.8 billion reais at the current quote) in the project.

“The development of the Rosebank field will allow us to reinforce our position as an important energy ally of the United Kingdom, while optimizing our oil and gas portfolio and increasing energy supply in Europe”, assured Equinor, which owns 80% of the project.
