American divisions of Korean automakers Hyundai Motor and Kia have recalled about 3.4 million vehicles due to the risk of fire in the engine compartment. Owners of these vehicles were advised to park on the street away from buildings until they were repaired. reported press service of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

“The vehicle’s anti-lock brake system module may leak brake fluid inside and cause a short circuit. An electrical short can cause significant voltage overload in the ABS module, increasing the risk of a fire in the engine compartment while driving or parked,” NHTSA explained.

The agency clarified that we are talking about cars produced between 2010 and 2017. Hyundai Models at risk of fire include Accent, Azera, Elantra, Elantra Coupe, Equus, Genesis Coupe, Santa Fe, Santa Fe Sport, Sonata HEV, Tucson, Tucson Fuel Cell, Veloster and Veracruz. For Kia, these models include Cadenza, Forte, Forte Koup, K900, Optima, Optima Hybrid, Rio, Rondo, Sorento, Soul and Sportage.

As noted by NHTSA, Hyundai soon plans to announce to its customers the need to bring their cars for repairs to the nearest dealerships. Kia is still looking for ways to solve the problem.

Both companies noted that they are not aware of any accidents involving injuries or deaths of drivers or passengers in the United States caused by this defect. But Kia recorded one case of engine compartment fire, three cases of fire and six cases of melting components in its cars.

According to NHTSA, there have been 21 recent vehicle fires in the United States, as well as 22 “heat incidents,” which include smoke or melting incidents.

Cars from Korean manufacturers are still among the most popular used cars on the Russian market, Otkritie Auto analysts previously reported. The top 20 most popular models included Hyundai Creta, Hyundai Santa Fe, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage и Kia Sorento.
