The American president clearly supports the striking employees of General Motors, Ford and Stellantis. He also has the presidential election next year in mind.
The most important purpose of the White House-orchestrated public relations exercise was achieved when the head of the striking UAW auto workers union, Shawn Fain, invoked the historic moment. “This is the first time in the history of the country that a sitting president of the United States has come out and joined strikers.”
In fact, America’s presidents have recently exercised restraint in labor disputes. The UAW has been on strike at the three automobile manufacturers Ford, General Motors and Stellantis for almost two weeks and expanded the industrial action last Friday.
