BRASILIA (Reuters) – The new president of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Luís Roberto Barroso, took advantage of the inauguration ceremony as head of the court to nod to the presidents of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), and the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), promising harmony between the Powers and dialogue, in the wake of discomfort with recent Judiciary decisions seen by parliamentarians as an invasion of Legislative powers.
Barroso considered, however, that the Judiciary must act with “self-restraint”, even if it is not possible to please everyone with its decisions.
“In a democracy there are no hegemonic Powers”, stated the new president of the STF.
“Guaranteeing the independence of each one, President Arthur Lira, President Rodrigo Pacheco, we will live in harmony, institutional partners that we are, for the good of Brazil.”
