The war of press releases and political declarations is in full swing in the current situation in the country. After the declaration of the 10 candidates and civil society organizations, the High Constitutional Court (HCC) also made its own yesterday. She defended herself on the validation of Andry Rajoelina’s candidacy and the establishment of collegial government.

In front of the press yesterday in Ambohidahy, Florent Rakotoarisoa, president of the HCC, ensures that he respects the Constitution in his decisions. “We refute this idea of an institutional coup d’état (…) and the assertions according to which the designation of the collegial government to assume the functions of the interim head of state is unconstitutional,” he declared. The President of the Senate voluntarily renounced the interim presidency of the Republic, hence the establishment of a collegial government, insists the HCC.

As for the validation of Andry Rajoelina’s candidacy, Florent Rakotoarisoa affirms that the HCC does not have to verify the French nationality or not of Andry Rajoelina. “His file is complete and allows him to officially present himself in the race for the supreme office. “, he says.

This Friday, the HCC invited all candidates to participate in an information meeting at Colbert in Antaninarenina but of the 13 candidates in the running, 10 announced that they wanted to boycott this invitation to express their disagreements with the recent decisions of this institution. These candidates accuse the HCC of impartiality. Indeed, the members of this institution are deemed close to power, such as Florent Rakotoarisoa, Rojoniaina Ranaivoson or Georges Merlin Rasolo Nandrasana, not to mention those who were appointed by the presidential quota.

In 2022, a European Union electoral monitoring mission deplored the appointment of Andrianarisedo Retaf Arsène Dama as head of the CENI and that of Florent Rakotoarisoa as president of the HCC. The mission considered that the presence of people deemed close to power in positions that could influence the outcome of the elections does not strengthen voters’ confidence in the democratic process with a view to the 2023 elections.
