(LaPresse) An Italian-French team has begun drilling in Antarctica with the aim of studying ice that formed 1.5 million years ago. After a few days of work, the team, led by Carlo Barbante, had reached a depth of 130 meters. The director of the Institute of Polar Sciences of the National Research Council (CNR), said they aim to go down to 2,700 meters. It is precisely the Italian CNR that coordinates the ‘Beyond Epica’ mission, aimed at finding ice samples that will be fundamental for assessing the Earth’s climatic trend and implementing mitigation strategies. ‘Beyond Epica-Oldest Ice’ is a seven-year project funded by the European Commission with 11 million euros. The drilling base is located on the summit of Little Dome C in Antarctica, at an altitude of 3,200 meters. The temperatures at the base of the drilling can range from -30 to -60 degrees centigrade. The first part of the research, developed between 1996 and 2005, was called “Epic” and has recovered ice samples from 800,000 years ago, now, with the new project, the researchers aim to find 1.5 million old ice. years.
