A shooting broke out this Thursday around 7:40 p.m. in the working-class neighborhoods of the north of Marseille, leaving at least two dead and one injured by gunfire in the Chutes-Lavie district, in the 4th arrondissement of Marseille, according to a police source in Le Parisien confirming a information from BFM Marseille. Kalashnikov shots were reportedly heard. One of the two victims died instantly while the second died “20 to 30 minutes after the first,” said one of the police sources.

The perpetrators fled in a vehicle. A burned car was found a little later in a park located not far from the scene of the shooting, “without being certain at this stage that it is that of the perpetrator(s), specified the Bouches-du-Rhône police headquarters, adding that the judicial police had been contacted. A long weapon was inside the vehicle, a police source told us. In any case, the affair seems to be akin to a settling of scores, possibly linked to a conflict between the Oliviers district and that of Parc-Corot. One of the victims, aged 41, is known for murder.

Double plated vehicle

The vehicle, which was not declared stolen, was covered with a false registration plate (covering the original), registered in the name of a deputy at the Marseille town hall, according to our information. Investigators believe that the involvement of this local elected official seems to be a pure coincidence, a police source tells us. Investigators will now try to find out more about the origin of the vehicle using the serial number.

These two new murders – whose link with the drug trafficking which is plaguing France’s second city has not yet been established – come more than two weeks after the last homicide officially linked by investigators to the war between gangs for control of drug sales points in the Marseille city. The person targeted was then a 56-year-old man, killed in the Estaque district, in the 16th arrondissement, in the north of the city.

Since the start of the year in Marseille, 42 people have lost their lives in violence officially linked to drug trafficking, including three collateral victims.
