LaLiga presented a report on the ‘Socioeconomic impact of professional football in Spain’which indicates that this sector generates in Spain a 1.44% of the Gross Domestic Product or GDP (18,350 million euros in the 2021-2022 season, accounting for direct, indirect and induced effects) and a total of 194,381 jobs, in addition to 8,390 million euros in taxes for the public coffers.

The presentation of this document prepared by the professional services firm KPMG was attended by Javier Tebaspresident of LaLiga, and Javier Gómez, corporate general director of the organization.

Significant increase

“We continue to increase our impact on national GDP. The sector continues to grow, continues to generate hundreds of thousands of jobs. There are many families those who live off what professional football generates,” said Tebas.

In this sense, the figures, detailed by Javier Gómez, reflect a clear evolution with respect to the 2012-2013 campaignin which the impact of the sector was 0.75% of GDP and the number of jobs was established at 144.748. All of this despite the fact that the analysis was carried out with respect to 2021-2022, in which the effects of the pandemic were still noticeable and there were partially closed stadiums among other limitations.

The CVC fund

The study also delved into the effect of LaLiga Impulso, the investment made by the British investment fund CVC of 1,929 million in LaLiga clubs. According to estimates, this will mean a economic impact of 6,291 million euros, the equivalent of 0.48% of GDP, and will create 49,714 jobs.

“It’s interesting how it has generated a drag effect. If there are clubs that have hotels in their plan, they are making investments with other companies. They develop a project that would not have been born without the Impulse Plan. Sometimes I hear that this is used to pay the debt and has nothing to do with it, it is fundamentally to generate infrastructure,” said Tebas.

Direct and indirect impact

For your part Javier Torresresponsible partner of KPMG Sports, explained: “It’s one methodology standard based on direct, indirect and induced impact”.

“The direct impact is the jobs and income generated by the industry directly, the indirect the consequence of the transactions in the industries that are adjacent to the world of football and the induced the new introduction of money into the economy through the income generated for the previous two,” Torres added.
