In case you didn’t know, more than 80 percent of blindness cases can be prevented; Although it is true that 70 percent of Mexicans do not go to the ophthalmologist and simply resign themselves to living with their illness.

This has been determined by Valeria Sánchez Huerta, general director of APEC Hospital for Blindness in Mexico, as she expressed that “the panorama in our country is challenging, since there are nearly 12 million Mexicans who live with some visual limitation or disability.”

Main visual diseases in Mexico

Many people do not go to an ophthalmological consultation because they do not know that their condition has a solution or even because they consider that visual health care is a high-cost service. This makes many resign themselves to living with their condition.

Among the main visual diseases in Mexico are the following:

Refractive errors. Senile cataract. Macular degeneration. Glaucoma. Diabetic retinopathy. Opacity in the cornea.

Going to the ophthalmologist is essential for prevention

From the Hospital for Blindness, they have launched campaigns such as “Love your eyes, visit the ophthalmologist”, aligned with the global theme of International Agency for the Prevention of Blindnesswhose objective is none other than to promote a culture of visual health focused on prevention at different stages of life, from childhood to old age.

Likewise, this hospital has launched the “Everyone counts” challenge, organized by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), through which APEC set the goal of achieving, in one month, 1,000 surgeries and 20 thousand consultations at low cost for patients who are in vulnerable situations.
