The United States approved this Thursday to stop just over $60 million in aid projects in Mexico.

The United States House of Representatives approved this Thursday to stop just over $60 million in aid projects in Mexico, in response to what the Republican Party considers “lack of will” of the government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to combat the fentanyl trafficking.

“The House passed my amendment to HR 4665 that cuts economic aid to Mexico due to the country’s failure to stop fentanyl production and trafficking,” Republican Rep. Alex Mooney posted on Facebook.

“This amendment is in response to the patently false statement made by Mexican President López Obrador” that fentanyl is not produced or consumed in Mexico, he added.

“Mexico should not be rewarded with economic relief funding when they refuse to stop fentanyl production that has killed hundreds of thousands of Americans,” Mooney added.

AMENDMENT

Mooney’s amendment, annexed to the United States Department of State Expenditure Act for 2024, must still be agreed upon by the Senate, which seems complicated, given that the Democrats, who have a majority in the Upper House, are opposed , considering that it affects key projects for the United States. The amendment affects aid projects in Mexico financed through the Economic Support Fund (ESF), which total $60.7 million.

The ESF funds are part of the aid that is being considered for Mexico for fiscal year 2024 and that exceeds $110 million.
