As expected, Alberto Núñez Feijóo has not achieved sufficient support to be sworn in as Prime Minister. The chamber gave a verdict: 177 votes against. The leader of the PP needed more ‘yeses’ than ‘noes’.

The candidate to occupy the Moncloa has begun his speech in a session that starts around 12:00 p.m. Afterwards, the parliamentary groups exercised their right to reply before the simple vote. From Genoa they praised Feijóo’s intervention and presence in Congress in the previous sessions. However, progressive and nationalist groups insisted that they were witnessing a motion of censure and not an investiture.

After the investiture failed, the PSOE immediately puts all the machinery in motion so that Pedro Sánchez can be proposed by King Felipe VI. The socialists are seeking a new investiture as soon as possible. Meanwhile, the Catalan independentists do not assure their support for Sánchez: they insist on their maxim, the self-determination referendum.

The king will meet with political leaders on Monday, October 2 and Tuesday, October 3, after Feijóo’s failed investiture. The question now is whether Sánchez will get the support and, if so, when. At the moment, there is no date for a new investiture session, but he has a maximum period of two months to achieve it. Otherwise, the elections will be repeated on January 14.
