Hearing loss is more common than we think and occurs when some parts of the auditory system do not function normally. Among these parts, we should talk about the following that we are going to list for you.

Parts of the ear

External ear: ears, ear canal and eardrum. Middle ear: eardrum and three bones that send waves from the eardrum to the inner ear. Inner ear: cochlea, which is the snail-shaped organ of hearing, semicircular canals that contribute to balance, and nerves that connect to the brain.

These are the most common types of hearing loss

Currently, we can differentiate between four types of hearing loss, which are the following:

Conductive: occurs when there is a blockage for sound to pass from the outer ear to the middle ear. It can be treated with medications or surgery. Sensorineural hearing loss: this is the type of loss that occurs when there is an alteration in the functioning of the inner ear or the auditory nerve. Mixed: it is a combination of the previous two. Auditory neuropathic spectrum disorder: occurs when sound enters the ear normally, but due to the presence of damage to the auditory nerve or inner ear, the sound is not processed in a way that the brain can interpret it.

There are different degrees

Regarding the degree of hearing loss, they can be classified into different types:

Mild: The person can hear some speech sounds but does not hear whispers clearly. Moderate: The person who suffers from this type of hearing loss may not hear almost anything that a person says when speaking at a normal volume. Severe: if a person suffers from this degree, he cannot hear what a person is saying when speaking at a normal volume and only perceives some loud sounds. Profound: the person who suffers from it does not hear anything that is spoken and can only hear some very loud sounds.

As you can see, hearing loss can be divided into various types and degrees depending on numerous factors, as we have shown you.
