The Regional Health Agency (ARS) of Île-de-France promised on Friday a bonus of 1,500 euros to medical interns who agree to do one of their internships in the greater Paris suburbs or in Seine-Saint-Denis, departments affected by medical desertification.

This experiment illustrates the efforts made in many territories in France to combat the lack of doctors. The interns, who are in their last four years of medical studies, help strengthen the local workforce of doctors. They are also potential future candidates for installation as doctors.

The bonus will come into effect next winter

“We note that training sites far from Paris and the inner suburbs are not very popular with interns and junior doctors,” said the ARS in a press release. “The territorial attractiveness allowance” of 1,500 euros for a semester “aims to compensate, on a lump sum basis, for the arduousness and additional costs linked to the distance from the internship sites,” she added.

“Experiencing the diversity of types of structures and territories offers many advantages, particularly when choosing your future professional future,” she also argued. The bonus, an “experiment launched at the initiative of the ARS Île-de-France”, will be in effect for the winter 2023-2024 and summer 2024 semesters.

To reach it, the interns will have to do their internship in Seine-et-Marne, in Yvelines, Essonne, Seine-Saint-Denis or Val-d’Oise. On the other hand, Paris, Hauts-de-Seine and Val-de-Marne are not affected by the system.
