Thiruvananthapuram: The intensity of heavy rainfall in Kerala shows no signs of abating as the state battles heavy downpours under the influence of low pressure systems over the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal. With a yellow alert declared in 10 districts, including Alappuzha and Ernakulam to Kasaragod, isolated places are expected to experience heavy rains today.

The ongoing heavy rainfall has compelled authorities to issue a fishing prohibition along the coasts of Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep. The continuous influence of low pressure systems over the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal is resulted in these depressions expected to intensify in the coming hours, further fueling the rainfall.

The Meteorological Department has issued a warning for heavy rainfall in three districts for the next day. Certain districts are likely to experience isolated heavy rains, accompanied by the possibility of high waves and storm surge along the Kerala coast and south Tamil Nadu coast. The Central Meteorological Department has predicted that these isolated heavy rains are likely to persist until October 1.

In response to the heavy rainfall, Thiruvananthapuram district has imposed a ban on quarrying and mining operations, excluding essential services to hilly, kayalora, and coastal regions. The ban, effective until further notice, aims to mitigate the risks posed by heavy rain in the district, which prompted the issuance of an orange alert on Friday.

According to the Meteorological Center, the formation of a low-pressure system in the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal is expected to sustain the rainfall in Kerala. A depression has formed in the central-east Arabian Sea, off the coast of Konkan-Goa.

On Saturday, a yellow alert has been issued for Alappuzha, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts. This alert will continue in Ernakulam, Kozhikode, and Kannur districts on Sunday.

The state continues to grapple with heavy rainfall and the associated challenges, with no respite in sight. Citizens are advised to exercise caution and take necessary precautions as the inclement weather persists.
