The Congress of Deputies has not given its confidence to Feijóo to head a government, which opens up several scenarios from now on, all defined in the Constitution. The first of them is the activation of the deadline for a candidate to obtain the necessary support before November 27 or, otherwise, elections will be called for January 14. As established in article 99, the king will dissolve the Cortes Generales and call new elections with the endorsement of the president of Congress, which should be held within a period of 47 days.

The acting President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, who has already advanced his intention to run for a new investiture, has two months to obtain the majority he needs. To do this, he must receive the order from the king after a new round of consultations that Felipe VI must hold with the representatives of the parties that have obtained seats in Congress, and that has been set for the next 2 and 3 October.

Afterwards, he will designate the acting president of the Government as a candidate and the president of Congress must set a date for the investiture debate. You can communicate that date immediately or give time for negotiation and specify it later.

Sánchez defends that this debate should take place as soon as possible, but he must calculate the time he needs to negotiate with the parties that will give him support, among them the independence groups Junts and ERC.

Investiture in October?

The spokesperson for the socialist group in Congress, Patxi López, had pointed out that the likely week for the investiture begins on October 16, and although the Government would like it to be that way, it doubts that the negotiations will be completed by then.

In the following week there is a meeting of the European Council in Brussels to which Sánchez must attend (on October 26 and 27), especially when Spain holds the European six-month presidency; and the following day, specifically on October 31, Princess Leonor, upon turning 18 that day, will swear in the Constitution in a solemn session of the Cortes Generales. The investiture debate should be fitted between these events or postponed until November.

If this has not been achieved by the 27th of that month, Spain would be headed for new elections on January 14, which would be the third time that elections have been repeated because no candidate has obtained the required support after the precedents of 2016 and 2019. .
