Two popular journalists from the Netherlands, Mike Verweij and Valentijn Driessen, are of the opinion that Ronald Koeman should ‘pass’ the decision Luuk de Jong, who this spring announced that he was retiring from international football, and call him to join the Oranje again. “For the good of Dutch football, I should call him,” says Driessen in the ‘De Telegraaf’ podcast. “Now he is in a phase of his career where everything works, but that is also because of everything he has been through. He (Luuk) can really play the best football from time to time, even if at times he seems clumsy and rigid. As national coach would call Luuk de Jong and ask him if he would like to come back.
Verweij points more directly to the Oranje’s sporting director, Niegel de Jong: “Koeman will surely not call him. He sees that as a kind of humiliation and I understand it. Luuk de Jong for his part thinks: ‘if they need me they will call me’ . So we find ourselves at a dead end. Nigel de Jong is there to serve the interests of Dutch football. Maybe he should say to Luuk ‘come whenever you want’. And to Koeman: ‘Can you use him? Ask Luuk if he wants to come back.’ for two or three games. Nigel de Jong should take the initiative.”
