Shiny blue satin, casual snake looks, plush teddy robes. This fashion show not only scores with extravagant fashion, but above all with unusual models.

The creations at NextUD JAPAN 2023 in Tokyo will be presented by people with disabilities. Participants from the “Japan Persons with Disability Fashion Association” conquered the catwalk in wheelchairs.

The wheelchair models showed suits, dresses, skirts and jackets that made one thing clear above all: clothing designed for wheelchair users not only has to look cool, but above all be practical. Pants or skirts should be easy to put on even when sitting, wrinkle little, and not wrinkle.

Because what looks great when standing often loses its shape when sitting. Pants ride up my legs and down my butt, clothes get bumped, blouses wrinkle. Store-bought fashion therefore usually has to be specially adapted for wheelchair users. A fact that very few people are aware of and achieving this awareness is particularly important for the initiators of the show.

The Union “ Japan Persons with Disability Fashion Associationwas founded in Osaka in 2019 with the aim of letting people enjoy fashion regardless of their disability.

In 2022, the club and its creations were guests at the Pariser Fashion Week. The club’s chairman, Kei Hirabayashi, together with other members, designed, among other things, a wrap skirt that can be easily put on and taken off in a wheelchair, as well as a short jacket, the back of which cannot wrinkle, for the show in the French fashion metropolis.

“Now that we’ve done a show in Paris, I feel like the door has opened for a new era where everyone can enjoy fashion,” Hirabayashi said at the time.

And the current catwalk presentation in Tokyo shows that fashion for wheelchair users not only has to be practical, but can also be quite extravagant.
