The Maritime and Port Chamber of Chile (Camport) reported that the cargo moved has decreased to its lowest point since 2015 in the first half of 2023. 54,563 million tons were moved in 2023 compared to 56,387 million in 2015.

During 2022, 91% of Chilean foreign trade was carried out through maritime transport. However, a comparative study carried out in the period from January to June between 2015 and 2023 reveals significant downward variations.

When comparing the first half of 2023 with the same period in 2022, there is a 10% decrease in the total tons moved, highlighting a 15.2% drop in general cargo. The value of foreign trade also experienced a decrease of 14.5% in the same period, with liquid cargo and refrigerated cargo being the categories that contributed the most to this decrease, decreasing by 21.6% and 16.5%, respectively.

Exported cargo decreased 2.9% during the first half of 2023 compared to the same period in 2015, while imported cargo experienced a drop of 3.7%. The total cargo moved showed a decrease of 3.2% when comparing the same periods in 2023 and 2015.
