What is causing the iPhone 15 Pro to overheat?

The company, when responding to complaints in a statement to CNET, identified several potential causes for the temperature problems. One of them is a bug in iOS 17, which will be addressed in a future software update. Apple also pointed out that recent updates to third-party apps, such as Instagram, Asphalt 9 and Uber, are taxing the A17 Pro chip’s CPU, causing additional heat in the devices.

Technology reviewer Faruk Korkmaz published a video documenting that the temperature of his iPhone 15 Pro Max reached 37 degrees within minutes of opening the Instagram app, a scenario that was also observed on his iPhone 14 Pro Max running iOS 17.

Despite the issues, Apple has ensured that the new models’ titanium frame and aluminum subframe are not contributing to overheating, saying these materials dissipate heat more efficiently than the stainless steel used in previous models.

In response to issues with third-party apps, Instagram released an updated version of its app on September 27, although it has not publicly commented on the overheating issues. Uber and Asphalt 9 developers Gameloft also did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Apple says a solution is on the way

Apple has not specified when the software update that will fix the iOS 17 bug will be released, but has assured that the fix will not affect the devices’ performance. The company also provided guidance on charging the new iPhones, explaining that they support any USB-C adapter that complies with the USB-C standard and that the device limits charging to a maximum of 27W to prevent additional issues.

While users wait for the software update, Apple has suggested a few strategies to minimize overheating, including enabling Low Power Mode and disabling background refresh for apps suspected of causing problems.

The current situation puts Apple under scrutiny as it works to resolve issues in its latest high-tech devices. More information and updates on solutions to the overheating issues are expected in the coming weeks.
