MS Swaminathan, Father of the Green Revolution, Laid to Rest in Chennai

Agricultural Scientist MS Swaminathan, also known as the father of the Green Revolution, was cremated yesterday in Chennai with the courtesy of the police department. The renowned agronomist, who passed away on the 28th at the age of 98, was hailed for his immense contribution to India’s agricultural sector.

Born in Kumbakonam in 1925, MS Swaminathan played a critical role in leading the Green Revolution during the 1960s when India faced severe food shortages. His efforts resulted in a significant increase in wheat production and the introduction of new varieties of rice, making India self-sufficient in rice production.

Throughout his illustrious career, Swaminathan held various roles at the Indian and international level, earning numerous prestigious awards, including the Padma Vibhushan. Recognizing his exceptional contributions, 38 universities conferred honorary doctorates upon him. He established the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation in Tharamani, Chennai, which continues to play a vital role in agricultural research and development.

After his demise, Swaminathan’s body was kept at the MS Swaminathan Foundation Hall in Taramani for the past two days, allowing the public to pay their final respects. Chief Minister M.K.Stalin, alongside agricultural scientists, party leaders, officials, and various other groups related to the agriculture sector, paid tribute to the late scientist. Political figures such as former Chief Minister Palaniswami, Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi, and leaders from different political parties also expressed their condolences and paid homage.

Yesterday, at 11.30 am, a police procession carried Swaminathan’s body from Taramani to the Besant Nagar cemetery. People lined the streets, expressing their gratitude and admiration for the renowned agronomist. At the Besant Nagar graveyard, police paid tribute to Swaminathan with 30 gunshots, honoring his significant contributions to the agricultural field. Subsequently, the last rites were performed, and his body was cremated.

The loss of MS Swaminathan is deeply felt not only in the agricultural community but also across the country. His tireless efforts have positively impacted the lives of countless individuals and have played a crucial role in transforming India into a self-sufficient nation in terms of food production. The legacy of this esteemed scientist will continue to inspire future generations in the field of agriculture and beyond.
