Artificial Intelligence to Revolutionize Stroke Patient Care

Researchers from Erasmus MC, in collaboration with Philips, are set to develop artificial intelligence (AI) technology that aims to drastically improve the care pathway for stroke patients. The initiative, led by Dr. Theo van Walsum, is focused on utilizing AI from the very first crucial moments of a stroke to rehabilitation, in order to make better choices for patients.

The team plans to gather comprehensive data throughout a patient’s journey, allowing for personalized treatment plans that are tailored to specific patient needs. By extracting information from the collected data, AI will be able to determine which treatments are more effective for different types of stroke patients. This breakthrough will not only improve patient outcomes, but also significantly reduce the socioeconomic costs associated with stroke.

Every year, about 1 million Europeans suffer from a stroke, making it a leading cause of death in developed countries. Additionally, strokes disable half of patients, leaving more than 6 million Europeans living with the aftermath of a stroke. The financial burden is staggering, with an estimated cost of 38 billion euros annually in Europe. Alarmingly, strokes are also becoming increasingly prevalent in young people, with an projected 1.5 million strokes expected per year in Europe by 2025.

Erasmus MC will contribute its clinical expertise in the fields of Neurology, Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, and Rehabilitation Medicine to the project, collaborating with researchers from the Department of Social Healthcare and the Biomedical Imaging Group Rotterdam. In addition, the Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management and the IGT Innovations department from Philips are also involved in this ground-breaking research.

The development of AI technology to enhance stroke patient care could potentially revolutionize the way strokes are managed and treated. This innovative approach holds immense promise for improving patient outcomes and reducing the burden on healthcare systems. With the implementation of AI, healthcare professionals and patients will have access to better decision-making tools, ultimately leading to personalized treatments that yield better results for stroke patients.
