A survey by the University of Lleida (UdL) reveals that 80% of Catalan farmers do not feel socially valued and what more than half plan to stop working before 2030. These are the main conclusions of the survey, made public this Saturday at the Fira de Sant Miquel de Lleida and which, according to a press release from Fira de Lleida, reflects the perception of a “very complicated future, especially for economic difficulties to carry out their exploitations, but also because they do not feel socially valued and suffer”.

The study was presented at a technical conference organized by the Department of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda and the UdL and includes the decrease in the number of dairy farms in Catalonia, which have gone from 530 in 2017 to 350 in July 2023. The main difficulty for farmers in the cattle sector is the higher production cost than the price of milk and also the bureaucratic complications they have to face.

The average age of Catalan livestock farmers is 49 years and at least half think that by 2030 they will no longer work in the sector. A situation added to the unattractiveness of this job among young people, who do not see it as a possibility for the future, according to Fira de Lleida.
