Despite good results, the opinion of the High Authority of Health raises concerns among those involved in screening regarding tomosynthesis.
In March 2023, the High Authority for Health (HAS) recommended the introduction of 3D mammography in organized screening for cancer be you. A first in the world: no country currently uses this technology as part of a screening program.
While traditional mammography reduces the breast to a flat 2D object, which can mask tumors, or falsely lead people to believe that a mass is present, tomosynthesis reconstructs an image of the breast in three dimensions from views obtained under different cuts. “This different way of examining the breast allows you to see better, particularly in dense breasts, and therefore provides better results than standard mammography,” comments Dr Luc Ceugnart, president of the French Society of Senology and Breast Pathology.
