Mr. Director

The detailed comment of Mr. Costas Leontaridis in the sheet of 20/9/2023 entitled “He too was destined to be a pioneer”brings to mind my memories of the same historical event of the blowing up of the ESPO building.

It was a Sunday morning when, as a ten-year-old child, I was being escorted to the garden of the Archaeological Museum of Athens and we were shocked by a powerful explosion nearby. We ran to the entrance of the park, on Patision Street, to see what happened and we saw huge flames coming out of a building, on the same street to the left and in the direction of Omonia, while the fire brigade vehicles arrived shortly after.

It was September 20, 1942 and it was about the historic blowing up of the Patision and Gladstonos building, which housed the pro-Nazi organization ESPO, by the patriotic resistance organization PEAN (Panhellenic Union of Fighting Youth) with retired Air Force officer Kostas Perrico as the protagonist.

I also remember that after the bombing, the ESPO organization in question housed its offices for some time in a designated area in the building of the Ionian School (Academy and Charilaou Trikoupi) where I studied.
