Title: Influenza Cases Soar in Thailand, Highlighting Urgent Need for Precautions

Date: Sunday 1 October 2023

Thailand is currently grappling with a sharp rise in influenza cases, with the number of reported infections nearing two hundred thousand. Disturbingly, this figure only accounts for individuals who have been tested for the virus, suggesting that the actual number may be significantly higher.

Renowned pediatrician Dr. Jiraruj Chomchom, specializing in respiratory diseases, shed light on the alarming situation through a personal Facebook post. Dr. Jiraruj revealed, “The influenza situation at this time is not surprising. Everywhere I turn, there are people sick with influenza. This is just the number reported, which pertains to cases examined at clinics. However, I don’t know how much longer I can rely on the reporting system. Looking at the graph, we hope that the peak period has already passed, but once weeks 37-38 conclude, the landscape may change again, necessitating extensive care.”

According to statistical data compiled by Dr. Jiraruj, the number of confirmed influenza patients stands at more than 185,216, with four deaths reported. Adding to this concern, Dr. Marriott Ponglamai of Bangkok Pattaya Hospital’s rehabilitation medicine center shared influenza patient statistics, stating, “185,216 are influenza patients, taking into account only those who have undergone testing. The true number is likely to be significantly higher.”

Dr. Ponglamai noted the widespread prevalence of the flu among their friends and patients, indicating that more than half of the children in a given class are affected. The admissions room is overwhelmed, and medicine supplies are running low. Comparing this year to the last, Dr. Ponglamai stated that coping mechanisms have become much harder, with individuals experiencing long-term health issues such as tonsils, allergies, coughing, chronic fatigue, and even cognitive and developmental setbacks.

Individuals with existing health conditions, weaker immune systems, or serious congenital diseases face grave risks. Dr. Ponglamai, who personally battles cancer and blood clots in their lungs, advised seeking preliminary virtual consultations to avoid direct exposure to germs.

Besides influenza, the threat of other respiratory diseases such as COVID-19, hand, foot, and mouth disease, and respiratory syncytial viruses (RSV) persists. Dr. Ponglamai highlighted the urgency of preventive measures for ourselves and our families, including wearing face masks, regular handwashing, sanitizing frequently touched surfaces, and maintaining personal hygiene habits.

With the ongoing rainy season exacerbating health concerns, it is crucial to take necessary precautions. Carrying an umbrella and avoiding unnecessary exposure to the rain while outdoors are crucial steps. Additionally, ensuring adequate rest, taking vitamins, and adopting a healthy lifestyle can help prevent illnesses and flu infection.

As Thailand battles the surge in influenza cases, it is vital for individuals to stay vigilant, prioritize personal health, and adhere to preventive measures. The alarming statistics serve as a sobering reminder of the importance of maintaining good hygiene habits and protecting oneself and others during these challenging times.
