Fire at Wedding Hall in Northern Iraq Kills Over 100 People, Blamed on Negligence
BAGHDAD, Oct 1 (Reuters) – A devastating fire tore through a crowded wedding hall in a town in northern Iraq, claiming the lives of more than 100 people. The tragic incident has been attributed to “gross negligence” and the lack of proper safety measures, according to the results of a government investigation.
Interior minister Abdul Amir al-Shammari revealed the findings during a news conference on Sunday. He stated that the owner of the wedding hall, along with three other staff members, had allowed a staggering 900 individuals to enter the venue, which was only designed to accommodate a maximum of 400 people.
“The fire was accidental and unintentional and occurred due to gross negligence,” stated the investigation results. The use of highly flammable decorations contributed to the rapid spread of the fire, transforming the hall into a blazing inferno, Shammari added.
Rescue teams faced immense challenges as they attempted to reach those trapped inside the wedding hall. The limited number and small size of the exit doors hindered their efforts, further exacerbating the tragedy.
The fire occurred in the Christian town of Hamdaniya, also known as Qaraqosh. In addition to the devastating loss of life, around 150 people sustained injuries in the incident.
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani visited the victims of the fire at two local hospitals on Thursday. He expressed his condolences and promised to hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
The death toll currently stands at 107, according to the interior minister. The investigation panel has recommended that the government provide financial support to the families of the deceased and the injured.
Furthermore, the investigation called for legal action to be taken against local officials who failed to implement adequate safety measures.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of stringent safety protocols and the need for responsible behavior in public spaces. The tragedy has left the community reeling and mourning the loss of their loved ones.
