It was signed by the president of USA, Joe Biden, an interim bill that will avoid a shutdown of the country’s government. The measure comes just moments before the deadline for funding for federal agencies to end.

With the signing, the American government will have resources to operate until November 17th. The measure includes financing for natural disasters, but not for Ukraine or for border security, for example.

“I just signed a law to keep the government open [funcional] for 47 days,” Biden said in a Twitter post. “There is plenty of time to pass government funding bills for the next fiscal year, and I strongly urge Congress to get to work immediately.”

Biden’s signature took place after approval by the Senate, on the night of Saturday 30th, a bipartisan bill to extend funding for the US government. This came after days of uncertainty about whether they would be able to reach an agreement to avoid the strike.

“The American people expect their government to work,” he continued Biden. “We’re going to make sure that happens.”

If a strike occurred, the entire country would be impacted, from air travel to drinking water. And many areas of public service would be disrupted.

The vote to approve the bill in the House came after a chaotic few hours, as Republicans met throughout Saturday morning, torn between their options on how to proceed.

The Senate had been working to advance its own bipartisan interim bill and was on track to hold a procedural vote on Saturday afternoon.

However, this was suspended after the House moved quickly to approve the short-term funding extension, and senators rallied behind the bill approved by the other House.

House Republicans “threw cold water” on the Senate bill, and Republican Senator Rand Paul promised all week to delay this process beyond the midnight deadline (when the government would no longer have funding for various agencies) due to to objections to aid to Ukraine included in the Senate bill.
