Chennai’s Flying Rail Line to be Handed Over to Tamil Nadu Government, says Southern Railway GM

Chennai, India – In a significant announcement, the General Manager of Southern Railway, RN Singh, declared that the Chennai Flying Rail Line, also known as the MRTS (Mass Rapid Transit System), will soon be handed over to the Tamil Nadu government. This decision was made during the massive cleanliness drive and campaign organized by Southern Railway on Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary.

The cleanliness campaign took place yesterday, with a theme focused on achieving a “Litter Free India.” It involved 1,200 locations within the Southern Railway network, including 360 stations, 43 railway quarters, 47 maintenance centers and workshops, 30 medical centers, and train driver’s quarters. The campaign drew the participation of 12,000 dedicated volunteers.

The General Manager of Southern Railway, R.N. Singh, kicked off the cleanliness campaign in Chennai Egmore. Speaking about the ongoing efforts, he stated, “Cleanliness work and campaigns are taking place throughout the Southern Railway. As part of this drive, we have decided to hand over the Chennai Flying Rail Line to the Tamil Nadu government. The government is currently preparing a business plan report for this transition. When the Tamil Nadu government requests, we will hand over the entire MRTS route to them.”

In addition, Singh hinted at possible changes in the timing of the Vaigai Express, taking into account public opinion. He emphasized that Southern Railway generally operates punctually and has already reduced the travel time for some additional trains.

Looking ahead, the General Manager revealed plans to launch the Vande Bharatrail service with sleeper facilities from next year, aiming to enhance the travel experience for passengers. This announcement bodes well for passengers seeking increased comfort and convenience during their rail journeys.

The cleanliness campaign and drive held at Chennai Central Railway Station saw the active participation of not only Singh but also the Additional General Manager Kausal Kishore and Chennai Zonal Manager Vishwanath Irya. Their involvement in promoting cleanliness and the continued development of railway services demonstrates the commitment of Southern Railway to the well-being and satisfaction of its passengers.

With the impending transfer of the Chennai Flying Rail Line to the Tamil Nadu government and the introduction of the Vande Bharatrail service with sleeper facilities, Southern Railway is poised to make significant strides in serving the transportation needs of the people.
