In response to the growing concerns, Paris’s deputy mayor, Emmanuel Grégoire, recently penned a letter to Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne, urging the government to take immediate action against the bedbug problem. With the Olympic and Paralympic Games just a few years away, Grégoire emphasized the urgency of implementing an action plan to address the issue effectively.
“The state urgently needs to put an action plan in place against this scourge as France is preparing to welcome the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2024,” Grégoire wrote in his letter, according to French TV news outlet TF1 Info. Despite attempting to reassure the public on social media, he made it clear that “no one is safe” from a potential infestation.
The concerns have also caught the attention of French Transportation Minister Clément Beaune, who expressed his intentions to meet with transport operators and discuss the bedbug issue. Beaune’s involvement highlights the gravity of the situation and the need for collaborative efforts to find practical solutions.
Statistics from a recent survey conducted by the French health agency ANSES revealed that approximately 1 in 10 households in France were infested with bedbugs between 2017 and 2022. The rise in infestations has been attributed to increased travel activity and the insects’ growing resistance to pesticides.
While bedbugs are not known to transmit diseases to humans through their bites, they are associated with a lower quality of life, sleep disorders, and mental health issues, according to ANSES. The agency emphasized the costly nature of dealing with bedbug infestations, considering the expenses for treatment and the psychological toll it takes on affected individuals.
The problem is not limited to Paris alone, as reports of bedbug and cockroach sightings have also emerged from Marseille, France’s second-most populous city. Residents have resorted to extreme measures, such as undressing on their balconies before entering their homes, in an attempt to keep the pests at bay.
In a recent incident, a college student captured footage of what appeared to be bedbugs on a high-speed train linking Paris and Marseille. The video showcased the little brown insects contrasting with the blue-and-white striped chairs, creating a distressing scene for passengers.
As the bedbug infestation concerns persist, it remains to be seen what concrete measures the French government and local authorities will take to address the issue effectively.
