At least 38 people have been injured in a large fire that broke out in a police building in the Egyptian city of Ismailiya, in the northeast of the country, on the banks of the Suez Canal.

The Egyptian Ministry of Health has confirmed this new death toll, as well as the transfer of 26 of the injured to a nearby hospital. Twenty-four of them showed symptoms of suffocation, while the remaining two suffered burns, according to the ‘Al Ahram’ newspaper.

The ministerial portfolio has indicated that it has sent 50 ambulances to the scene of the incident and has announced a state of emergency in the governorate’s hospitals so that they can receive a large number of injured people.

The Egyptian Civil Defense Forces have managed to control the fire, the causes of which are unknown. The Prosecutor’s Office has already opened an investigation to clarify the event.
