Actors Union SAG-AFTRA and AMPTP Resume Negotiations After Strike Declaration

In a significant development in the ongoing dispute between the actors union SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), both sides have concluded a full day of negotiations on Monday. This marks the first time since the union declared a strike on July 14 that dealmakers have been in the same room discussing their issues.

While specific details about the negotiations were not shared, it has been confirmed that both parties plan to reconvene this week at the SAG-AFTRA headquarters in Los Angeles. A representative for the guild stated, “SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP met for a full day bargaining session and have concluded. Negotiations will resume Wednesday, Oct. 4.”

Prior to the meeting, top Hollywood CEOs such as Bob Iger, Donna Langley, David Zaslav, and Ted Sarandos attended the negotiations. Meanwhile, the union urged its members to continue picketing across town as a show of solidarity. In a statement shared on social media, SAG-AFTRA wrote, “Today, we go back to the bargaining table to fight for the contract you deserve. As we negotiate, we ask that you not let up. Keep turning out in full force on our picket lines and at solidarity events around the country. Let the AMPTP hear your voices loud and clear. It makes a difference.”

The recent resolution of the Writers Guild of America strike has raised hopes that a similar deal can be reached with the actors soon. SAG-AFTRA’s priorities in these negotiations include seeking improved payment terms for vulnerable members, such as extras, background actors, and day players. Additionally, the union aims to regulate generative artificial intelligence and the reuse of actor likenesses using cutting-edge rendering technologies. The union is also pushing for a boost in streaming residuals.

As negotiations continue, both SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP remain committed to finding a resolution that satisfies the needs of all parties involved. The outcome of these negotiations will have significant implications for the future of the entertainment industry and the working conditions of actors in Hollywood.
