Campaigning Congressman Henry Cuellar Carjacked in Washington, D.C.

by time news

U.S. Representative Henry Cuellar, a Democrat from Texas, became a victim of a carjacking incident in Washington’s Navy Yard area, according to multiple media sources. The incident occurred late Monday, October 2, 2023, about a mile from the U.S. Capitol. Cuellar’s chief of staff, Jacob Hochberg, confirmed that the Congressman was unharmed in the attack.

Hochberg stated, “As Congressman Cuellar was parking his car this evening, 3 armed assailants approached the Congressman and stole his vehicle. Luckily, he was not harmed and is working with local law enforcement.” Fortunately, the police were able to recover Cuellar’s vehicle.

This incident marks the second assault on a member of Congress in the District of Columbia this year. In February, Democratic Representative Angie Craig from Minnesota was assaulted in her apartment building, sustaining bruises while managing to avoid serious injury. Although her chief of staff stated that the attack did not appear to be politically motivated, Kendrid Khalil Hamlin pleaded guilty to charges of assaulting a member of Congress and assaulting law enforcement officers in that case. Hamlin was also accused of assaulting two officers who were attempting to arrest him on the day of Craig’s attack.

Law enforcement agencies have been increasingly concerned about crime rates and safety in the nation’s capital, particularly targeting elected officials. The carjacking incident involving Cuellar highlights the need for improved security measures to protect public officials while carrying out their duties. As investigations into these cases continue, policymakers will likely emphasize the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of elected representatives.
