Lars Dittrich was not born with capitalism. “The fall of the Berlin Wall catapulted me straight into it when I was 15,” says the man who today could also be described as a “model capitalist from East Germany”. For the student, this was the starting point of a picture-perfect career, the likes of which are not often found in the East.

Reunification made Dittrich a wealthy entrepreneur. But over the past 33 years he has also seen many around him struggle and fail. That’s why there are a lot of things bothering him today, he says at a meeting at the Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin: the entrenched East-West mindset, the snooty comments from the West about East Germans, the stupid AfD voters. And the huge problems that the country urgently needs to solve. “We have to find ourselves again,” says the entrepreneur. “Otherwise we will lose the global connection. Against this background, East-West is just a regional banality.”
