Asturias closed September with 56,337 people unemployed, 1,920 more than the previous month. The increase was 3.53%, the highest recorded among all the autonomous communities and almost four times higher than that of Spain as a whole (0.73%). The increasing dependence on the services sector explains the sharp rise in unemployment in the region. Asturias had recorded a record occupancy this summer in activities linked to tourism and once the high season ended, unemployment has skyrocketed in the tertiary sector.

Of the 1,920 new unemployed registered in September in Asturias, 1,575 belong to the services sector, which has seen an increase in unemployment of 3.95%. In councils with a tourist pull such as Llanes, Cangas de Onís, Castropol, Colunga, Valdés, Navia, Onís, Ribadedeva or Somiedo, unemployment rose at double-digit rates with the end of the high season, which in Asturias is shorter than in the South or the Mediterranean.

In the rest of the sectors, unemployment also increased in September in Asturias. In the group of people without previous work, the increase was 3.22%, and the increase was smaller in industry (2.72%), in agriculture and fishing (2.42%), and in construction (0 .81%).

Despite the strong monthly rise in unemployment, the annual comparison continues to show positive figures. Asturias has 5,452 fewer unemployed than in September 2022, which represents a decrease of 8.8%.

During September, 20,362 employment contracts were made in Asturias, 1,006 less than in the previous month and 3,642 less than in September 2022. 84.2% of the contracts were made in the services sector. Permanent workers represented 34.3% of the total in the region, while at the national level they represent 44.8%.

The average number of Social Security affiliates in Asturias was 378,944 people in September, 6,122 less than the previous month (-1.59%) and 6,127 more than in the same month of 2022 (1.64%).

The new manager of the Public Employment Service of the Principality of Asturias (Sepepa), Begoña Lópezhighlighted that unemployment rose “at low values within the historical series”, pointing out that the increase of 3.53%, the largest in relative terms among the autonomous communities, is lower than that registered in the last two years, of 4 .33% in 2022 and 4.12% in 2021. He also pointed out that this increase, after the slight rebound of 0.15%, occurs after Asturias led the reduction in unemployment in Spain in both June and July.

“Four out of every five new unemployed correspond to the services sector,” he highlighted. Ignacio Garciadirect from Corporate Support of the FADE employers’ association, who added that “the Social Security affiliation data are also worrying, with the second largest percentage loss among self-employed communities.”

The person responsible for Employment at CC OO of Asturias, María José Gutiérrez, pointed out that “September marks the end of the summer season and brings job destruction and an increase in unemployment,” and specified that, above all, it does so “in the services sector, among women and, more markedly, among youth “so he called for “decided policies” in favor of these groups. The Secretary of Employment of UGT Asturias, Javier Campaopted to convert the Principality’s Public Employment Service (Sepepa) into “a true employment placement, guidance and intermediation office” that adapts to new times and meets the needs of the market.

In the country as a whole, the number of unemployed increased by 19,768 people, 0.73%, in line with the evolution of other months of September, leaving the total number of unemployed at 2,722,468.
