The internal Datathon has begun with a first session at the headquarters of the Spanish Railways Foundation with the aim of enhancing the value and culture of data, the use of the single information platform and knowledge of business analytics. In this way, the achievement of the company’s goals is promoted through the analysis of the enormous volume of information that is generated. Likewise, creativity, problem solving and collaboration among participating employees are reinforced.

Datathon

Datathon is a term that unites two concepts, marathon and data, in a dynamic format that is characterized by challenging to adequately solve different challenges through the use of a set of data. This project has been divided into three stages: identification of challenges, selection of participants and execution.

In its development, the method to generate innovative ideas, known as Design Thinking, will be used and informative sessions will be held on the importance of data and Artificial Intelligence in organizations. In addition, the teams will be guided in learning new technologies through the technique that transfers the mechanics of games to the professional field, gamification, and fun.

Phases

The first session of this Datathon focused on the identification and definition of the challenges. For this activity, a group of Renfe professionals has been selected for their involvement in the Data Office and their knowledge of the business and systems, since they have a global vision of the company and a mastery of the multiple details that characterize the activities. of the company.

The next step will be the election of the participants for the next phase and it is planned that, at the end of November, two face-to-face days will be held for the execution of the Datathon. Although this is the first time that Renfe has organized an initiative of this type, it has previously held similar meetings. Among them, a “hackathon” on board an AVE from Madrid to Barcelona, ​​to look for innovative solutions to improve the traveler’s experience.

Advantages

The purpose of the Datathon is to take advantage of the “opportunities offered by digitalization and new technologies to fully exploit data, apply it to all areas and use it to transform each area and the way of working,” as indicated by the president of Renfe, Ral Blanco, during the first meeting.

Likewise, he recalled the large amount of data available related to services, both passenger and freight transport, as well as maintenance, and how good management and application helps to be “more profitable, more competitive and to improve.”
