James Bond was always well dressed. But no 007 actor cared about wrinkle-free suits as much as Roger Moore. He even let some of them go with him after filming was over. Luckily for the auction industry.

In this case, the provenance, which is so crucial in the world of cultural heritage, is clearly clarified: on the label of the dinner suit, which will be auctioned at the Bonhams auction house in London on October 4, 2023, not only is the tailor marked “Hayward – 95 Mount Street , London W1Y 5HG”, but also the date of delivery (“6.6.84”) and the customer “Mr. R. Moore.” So there is no doubt about the authenticity of the piece.

However, one could ask questions about ownership: Roger Moore admitted late in life that he simply let some Bond suits go with him after filming was finished – they belonged to the production company. But where there has never been a plaintiff, there is no judge.

In any case, this midnight blue double-breasted suit with four buttons clearly comes from “A View to a Kill,” the seventh and final Moore Bond. You can see the suit, among other things, in the opening sequence: James Bond dines in the Eiffel Tower restaurant with a detective named Achille Aubergine (!), who is soon shot by a killer named May Day (!!).

Bond pursues May Day to the top of the tower, where she jumps out with a parachute. 007 takes the elevator, hijacks a taxi and gives the instruction: “Follow this parachute!”

Every Bond is defined by his suits and none more so than Roger Moore. His early jackets came from Cyril Castle, who incorporated 1970s style and loosened up the agent’s look. He was followed by Douglas Hayward, and as Moore grew older (he was 57 in A View to a Kill), his style became more sober.

There were several identical suits for each film (chase sequences get wrinkles). And the at Bonhams Like so many Bond memorabilia, it even has an auction history: 25 years ago it was sold at Christie’s for 4,600 pounds. Now it should bring in 20,000 to 30,000.
