Title: Woman Sentenced for Animal Cruelty After Overfeeding and Neglecting Mini Pig

Subtitle: Pig euthanized due to extreme weight gain and health issues

Date: January 2022

In a disturbing incident of animal cruelty, a woman in the Gothenburg area of Västra Götaland has been sentenced for neglecting and overfeeding her mini pig, resulting in its euthanization. The county administration carried out an animal welfare check at the woman’s address after receiving a report of the pig’s illness.

The owner of the pig, a 45-year-old woman, had left for the United States and entrusted the care of the animal to an acquaintance. When inspectors arrived at the house, they found the pig lying on the living room floor, unable to move properly due to extreme excess weight.

During the inspection, the pig exhibited signs of distress, screaming and prancing, but was unable to lift its head or get up from the floor. According to the county administrative board’s later criminal complaint, the pig had heavy fatty deposits on its face, skin irritation in the furrows, and completely embedded eyes due to layers of fat.

Disturbed by the pig’s dire condition, the authorities made the difficult decision to euthanize the animal. The county administrative board published pictures of the pig, showing its deep folds and furrows on the face, with the eye sockets not visible.

In police questioning, the woman claimed that she had not neglected the pig intentionally and put him on a diet when he became overweight. She listed his diet to include chicken fillet, meatballs, tuna, crab fish, and various berries. Moreover, she mentioned making sugar-free juice ice cream for the pig.

The woman’s public defender, Anders Segerblom, asserted that she was aware of the pig’s suffering and had tried to address the situation. However, the district court disagreed and found her guilty of animal cruelty.

The court imposed a penalty of 70 daily fines of SEK 75, totaling SEK 5,250. The woman, who was a doctor specializing in psychiatry, had her medical license revoked in May 2022 after an investigation revealed that she had prescribed narcotic-classified drugs to herself and a relative. This revocation is unrelated to the animal cruelty verdict.

The woman has not yet decided whether she will appeal the sentence. Expressen, a local news outlet, attempted to contact her for a statement but was unsuccessful.

Animal welfare organizations and advocates are urging authorities to strengthen penalties for animal cruelty cases to further protect vulnerable creatures from such mistreatment.

While this case sheds light on the importance of responsible pet ownership and the consequences of neglecting an animal’s well-being, it also highlights the need for stricter regulation and monitoring of animal welfare by authorities to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
