On October 3, a trial was held to replace the 2-month pretrial detention measure with house arrest for the chairman of the Confederation of Workers’ Table Trade Unions, Afiddin Mammadov. Zibeyda Sadighova, Mammadov’s lawyer, informed Voice of America about this.

According to the lawyer, the court did not grant the request:

“We said that Afieddin is being accused of a criminal act for the first time, he has a permanent address and he did not swear at all. Afieddin himself said that whatever happened to him happened because of his social activities, because he had been arrested 3 times before. In general, he stated that no such crime happened, he did not see anyone being stabbed.”

Zibeyda Sadygova said that the person known as the victim himself injured Afieddin Mammadov and as a result his nose was damaged.

“Even in the court, he showed the swelling on his nose, that’s right, the dark under his eyes was removed. He told me to take pain medication because he sometimes gets headaches. He also stated in the court that he does not know the victim, he has never met that person. He is innocent and unjustly imprisoned, but the court did not appreciate our arguments and did not grant our petition,” said the lawyer.

The chairman of the Workers’ Desk was released on August 31 of this year after a 30-day prison sentence on charges of petty mischief and disobeying the order of a police officer.

Other members of the organization, Elvin Mustafayev and Aykhan Israfilov, were arrested on drug charges, and both were sentenced to 4 months in prison.

Afieddin Mammadov was arrested on September 20 and a 2-month preventive measure was chosen. He is charged with the Criminal Code of intentional grievous bodily harm and hooliganism with the use of a weapon or an object as a weapon. According to the official accusation, Afieddin Mammadov injured an unnamed person with a knife. However, Afieddin Mammadov himself does not accept these accusations and says that his arrest was politically motivated.
