A Croatian woman who was pregnant and celebrating her honeymoon with her fiancé was among the victims of the accident when a bus full of tourists overturned after falling from a bridge in the city of Venice, in Italyon Tuesday night (3).
Antonela Perkovic was among the 21 people killed in the tragedy that also killed a newborn and two other children, in addition to leaving 15 others injured. The tourist bus broke through a security barrier and plunged 30 feet off a bridge in Venice last night.
Antonela’s husband, Marko Bakovic, survived the accident, which happened in the city of Mestre, while the bus was transporting tourists back to a camp from Venice, reported the British tabloid Daily Mail.
The newlyweds got married three weeks ago in their hometown of Split, on the Croatian coast, and were on an extended honeymoon.
Croatian Foreign Ministry officials confirmed the death of a woman and said a man was being treated at a local hospital.
Details about the wedding, however, emerged in the local media. Antonela and Marco’s Facebook profiles featured photos of the ceremony, with friends congratulating them.
Authorities said an investigation into multiple traffic homicides has been opened in accordance with Italian legal protocol.
Meanwhile, two migrants were hailed as heroes after rushing to save tourists trapped in the burning bus. Boubakar Toure, 27, and Godstime Erheneden, 30, from Gambia, were cooking when the bus fell off the bridge.
Erneheden, a welder, told The Telegraph: “There was a woman speaking in English, she was crying and saying: ‘Take my daughter, take my daughter.’ She was a little girl, I think she was about two years old. She was unconscious and I was afraid she might be dead.”

Investigators believe the bus driver – identified as 40-year-old Italian Alberto Rizzotto – had a “medical episode”, causing the electric vehicle to leave the road.
