In commemoration of Occupational Medicine Day, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) highlights the work of 1,146 grassroots and trusted doctors who are part of the Occupational Health services in the 35 Deconcentrated Administrative Operation Bodies (OOAD).

These professionals are responsible for preventing risks and recognizing health damage in work environments.

These specialized doctors play a fundamental role in addressing the consequences of health problems related to workplaces. They evaluate whether a person with a condition can perform their job, thus contributing to a safe and healthy work environment.

Rebeca Velasco, head of the IMSS Occupational Health coordination, emphasizes that since the founding of the Institute, Occupational Medicine has been a key axis to achieve social justice. “We seek to provide companies and workers with advice and recommendations to avoid accidents and occupational diseases, and ensure that workplaces are safe and healthy places,” explains Velasco.

In 2022, the IMSS treated various diseases through Occupational Medicine, highlighting the attention to 63,405 cases of Covid-19, 2,836 cases of back pain, 2,149 cases of hearing loss, 1,233 cases of shoulder injuries, 1,144 cases of Syndrome of the Carpal Tunnel and 1,031 workers affected by Pneumoconiosis.

To prioritize the health of workers and actively collaborate with companies and unions, in May 2022, the IMSS presented the Safe and Healthy Work Environments (ELSSA) program. This program, which is free, voluntary and non-punitive, has the main objective of guaranteeing safe work environments and promoting the health of workers.
