Donald Trump Speaker? It’s possible but unlikely

From our correspondent in the United States,

“Speaker Trump” to preside over a session in the House? The idea, which some had already put forward in January, is coming back with insistence today after the dismissal of Kevin McCarthy, who fell in the face of a revolt of eight Republicans from the right wing of the party.

Officially, the battle is launched between two Trumpist candidates, Jim Jordan (Ohio) and Steve Scalise (Louisiana), but some elected officials are publicly campaigning for the former president to inherit the gavel. If such a scenario is – provided the Republicans change a rule – possible, and Donald Trump has not completely ruled out the idea, 20 Minutes is willing to bet that won’t happen.

FAKE OFF

Marjorie Taylor Green and several Republicans have assured that they intend to nominate or vote for Donald Trump. Nothing in the American Constitution stipulates that it is necessary to be elected to the House to preside over it. In practice, however, representatives have never elected an outside candidate in 234 years.

There is, however, a current obstacle: the rules chosen in January by the Conservative Party for its leaders. Which specify “that a member of the Republican leadership would be required to resign if he were indicted for a crime punishable by at least two years in prison”. And Donald Trump faces four criminal charges, for a total of 91 theoretically punishable charges a maximum of 712 years in prison. These rules can, however, be changed by an internal vote. The person concerned blows hot and cold. In front of the cameras on Wednesday, he assured:

“All I can say is that I will do what is best for the country and the Republican Party. We have great (candidates). I’m focused on the presidential election, but if I can help them, I will. »

At the same time, he reposted a photo on Truth Social showing him holding Speaker’s gavel.

In addition to his probable duel against Joe Biden and his four upcoming trials, Donald Trump has another problem: nothing guarantees that he would be elected. With a tiny majority of five votes in the House, Republicans must close ranks to choose a Speaker. A candidate can only lose four elected officials – this is why it took 15 rounds of voting for Kevin McCarthy to triumph in January. And with several dozen centrist Republicans who will have to fight for their re-election in November 2024, a vote for Donald Trump is undoubtedly the last thing they want to have to justify to undecided voters.
