Decline in Participation Rates for Cancer Screenings: RIVM Reports

HARDERWIJK (ANP) – The RIVM health institute has revealed that the numbers of participants in population screenings for breast cancer, cervical cancer, and colon cancer have been steadily declining. Despite a slight recovery in 2021, the figures for 2022 have again dropped lower than before the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the organization.

In the breast cancer screening program, the percentage of invitees who participated fell from 73 percent in 2021 to almost 71 percent in 2022, as per the RIVM’s assessment. Similarly, the participation rate for colon cancer research decreased from 71 percent to 68 percent, while cervical cancer screenings experienced a more significant decline, with numbers dropping from 54 to 46 percent.

The RIVM has initiated an investigation to ascertain the reasons behind the declining participation rates. However, the organization has already identified certain segments of the population that are less likely to engage in these screenings. In many cases, individuals with lower incomes, lower education levels, and/or a migration background are not being effectively reached.

The institute emphasizes the importance of early detection through population studies, citing that in 2022, thousands of people were found to have a pre-stage or form of cancer through these screenings. Early detection often allows for less drastic treatment options and better outcomes for patients.

The RIVM is now calling for increased efforts to reach those who are currently less likely to participate in cancer screenings. By advancing outreach strategies and targeting underrepresented communities, they hope to reverse the declining trend and ensure that more individuals have access to potentially life-saving screenings.

As cancer remains a leading cause of death worldwide, it is crucial to prioritize participation in screenings to catch any potential signs of cancer at the earliest stages. The RIVM will continue to monitor the trends in participation rates and take necessary steps to address the barriers that prevent individuals from accessing these vital screening programs.]
