Díaz, regarding Sánchez’s statements without mentioning the term amnesty: “We must speak clearly, we want the conflict to end once and for all”

The leader of Sumar and second vice president of the acting Government, Yolanda Díaz, gave an interview this Friday on the program Cafe of Ideas, on TVE Catalonia. “We are living a war that is illegitimate, that is illegal, that violates international law,” said Yolanda Díaz about the war in Ukraine. “People have the right to exercise legitimate defense,” added Díaz, who has asked to “sharpen” diplomatic channels to end the conflict. “What we would like is for Europe to have its own strategic, autonomous position. Foreign policy is led by the President of the Government,” said Díaz when asked if he agrees with the shipment of weapons to Ukraine announced on Thursday by the acting President of the Government and Secretary General of the PSOE, Pedro Sánchez.

Asked about a possible amnesty for those prosecuted by the process and based on Sánchez’s words yesterday, in which he stated that there are negotiations underway without mentioning the term, Díaz said: “I think we have to speak clearly, above all to respect citizens. Beyond words, what the President of the Government is expressing is the reach of a new political time in which we want the political conflict to end once and for all.” And he added: “The measures we adopted in the last legislature, the dejudicialization of the political conflict, is appropriate. Today we are much better in Catalonia than in the past.” Díaz has accused the PP of “abdicating” in its political proposal for Catalonia: “I don’t want to set Catalonia on fire, I want to have a Catalonia in favor, I want to have a country in favor, and all the measures that abound in ending once and for all “A conflict that we should never have had is to be welcomed.”

“The first thing I have to say is that there are many modalities of amnesty, and there are many configurations of what interpretation is made of the amnesty,” defended Díaz, who has argued that the amnesty does not have to mean that the State recognize that he made a mistake in 2017, when an independence referendum was held in Catalonia declared illegal by the Spanish justice system and the then Catalan president Carles Puigdemont declared independence. “We should never have reached this situation because we are talking about political conflicts, and when there are political conflicts there is only one tool to address them, which is politics and dialogue,” added the vice president. Díaz has also revealed that she is negotiating with Sánchez for an Executive with fewer ministries.

“I always ask for discretion in negotiations. Anything, sometimes, sometimes even small sparks can make everything fail. I know it very well, even public demonstrations,” Díaz said about the negotiations with Junts and ERC to invest Sánchez. Díaz has insisted that discretion is key for the talks to come to a successful conclusion.
