Today, October 6, we celebrate the World Cerebral Palsy Day and the objective is none other than to raise awareness about this condition to make its needs visible and guarantee an inclusive future in which people who suffer from it have the same rights, access and opportunities as any other person. If you want to know what the situation of this disability is in Mexico, we are going to show it to you below, in addition to explaining what it consists of.

What is cerebral palsy?

It can be defined as a group of neuromotor disorders that occur during or after pregnancy and that permanently affect body movement and muscle coordination, due to an injury or anomaly in brain development, either before, during or after birth.

Cerebral palsy is the main cause of childhood disability and it can be said that it is a disease non-progressivewhich means it will not worsen over time.

Main causes

Some of the causes of cerebral palsy acquired after birth include:

Brain damage in the first months or years of life. Problems with blood flow to the brain. Head injuries. Brain infections (such as viral encephalitis or bacterial meningitis).

Cerebral palsy in Mexico

Worldwide, there are more than 17 million people living with cerebral palsy and, every day, nearly a thousand children are born with this condition. In Mexico, according to data offered by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), exist around 7.7 million people who live with this disability and around 770 thousand people have a diagnosis of childhood cerebral palsy.

The vast majority of minors with this disability are diagnosed during the first two years of life. If children’s symptoms are mild, it may be very difficult for a doctor to make a reliable diagnosis before they are 4 or 5 years old.
