Around 5 million people face an unusual cut in the supply of drinking water in Lima, due to maintenance on pipes that will last until next Monday.

Half of the capital’s population of 10 million inhabitants was left without power as of today, amid complaints to the authorities.

Residents from various areas of the city, especially the hills, questioned the lack of planning for the works, announced a month ago. “I don’t know what we will do to cook. The water doesn’t reach the highest parts of the hills,” said AFP Carmen Ziga, coordinator of Community Panels in one of the districts in the south of Lima most affected by the mass cutting.

In total, 22 of Lima’s 43 districts will be affected by the suspension of the service. The state water and sewage company, Sedapal, mobilized a hundred water trucks to alleviate the cut.

“I ask our brothers in Lima to calm down. We are all committed to ensuring that this has as little impact as possible this weekend,” declared the Minister of Housing, Hania Prez de Cullar. According to Sedapal, the work will improve the service provided to around 4 million people.

Located on the banks of the Pacific, Lima is a capital built on a desert. It is estimated that around 635 thousand inhabitants do not have access to water and sewage services.

Access to water has been a long-standing problem in Peru, where the El Niño phenomenon was, in many cases, the reason for cuts in the past. The climatic event causes droughts and intense rains, affecting the supply in Lima, which is fed by rivers in the Andes.
