The US Navy recently disclosed an operation conducted last month, utilizing drone boats to track Iranian warships and gunboats in the Middle East. The primary objective of the mission was to deter Iran from consistently harassing foreign military and commercial ships in the region.

The operation, which spanned several days in September, involved a dozen unmanned platforms and manned ships. The US assets closely monitored vessels belonging to Iran’s regular navy and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGCN), citing unlawful seizures of internationally flagged merchant ships as a reason for increased monitoring. The mission took place during routine patrols in and around the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically vital waterway between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

As part of the operation, the drone boats captured photographs of Iranian speedboats, drones, helicopters, an IRGCN warship, and an Iranian Navy frigate. The images provide crucial evidence of Iranian aggressions and help in assessing potential threats in the region.

The US Navy has increasingly turned to drone boats, operating both above and below the surface, to enhance surveillance capabilities in Middle Eastern waters. In August 2022, the US Navy successfully prevented the IRGC from attempting to capture one of its unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) in the Persian Gulf. However, the following month, an Iranian ship briefly seized two American drone boats, which were subsequently recovered through US military intervention.

Captain Joe Baggett, director of maritime operations for NAVCENT and US 5th Fleet, highlighted the importance of integrating unmanned systems into fleet operations. This integration enhances maritime domain awareness, increases deterrence, and supports the safe transit of goods through critical chokepoints like the Strait of Hormuz.

The additional presence of fighter jets and warships in the region further strengthens the US military’s capabilities to deter any malicious activity by Iran. Lt. Gen. Alexus G. Grynkewich, commander of US Air Forces Central Command, stated that the increased American force presence has deterred Iran from taking any actions against maritime shipping.

While acknowledging that deterrence is temporary, Grynkewich emphasized that the US’s message of a surge in forces is a response to specific threats. Any increase in Iranian activity would prompt a re-escalation of US military presence to counter the threat effectively.

The integration of drone boats and other unmanned systems has proven invaluable in monitoring Iranian ships and safeguarding regional stability. The US Navy remains committed to ensuring maritime security and deterring any aggressive actions in the Middle East.
