MOSCOW, 6 Oct. (DPA/EP) –

The president of Moldova, Maia Sandu, denounced this Friday that the Wagner Group – an organization of mercenaries related to Russia – had tried to orchestrate a coup d’état by trying to bribe participants in anti-government demonstrations to turn them violent.

“The situation is really dramatic and we have to protect ourselves,” said President Sandu during an interview for the American newspaper ‘Financial Times’, although she did not specify when the aforementioned coup attempt took place.

The authorities of Moldova, a country located on the southwestern border of Ukraine, already denounced an imminent coup attempt at the beginning of the year. Later, in March, the Government announced the arrest of a mercenary from the Wagner Group.

The Wagner Group, led by Yevgeni Prigozhin until his death at the end of August, has been the main paramilitary organization supporting Russia in the war in Ukraine. After an attempted rebellion, Moscow dispensed with his services.
