He convent of the Capuchins of Fig trees hosted this Friday the first information day of the selection process to cover 500 jobs from the logistics center that Amazon has opened at the Logis del Far d’Empordà. The company is looking for reinforcement staff of warehouse for the Black Friday and Christmas campaigns, but the forecast is that many of the places will end up consolidating.
Figueres City Council collaborates in the process with the aim of reducing “unemployment rates” in the county and the city and promoting people to stay at work. “We have to square the circle”, says the mayor, Jordi Masquef.
“I saw the offer on the internet, I don’t have a job and I decided to come,” explains Raúl. He is one of the twenty people who attended this Friday at the first information day to sign up for the offer of 500 jobs launched by the multinational Amazon. It is also the case of Quim. He is 64 years old and has been unemployed for a year. He says that it is not “easy” to find one in the area and that on this occasion they do not set any age.
It is about warehouse reinforcement places for in the Black Friday and Christmas campaign in the logistics center they have in Far d’Empordà, but the forecast is that a large part of these jobs will eventually stabilise. The City Council of Figueres participates in the registration and selection process with some sessions held in the old convent of the Capuchins. It does this in coordination with the multinational and the SOC. From today until October 20, interested people can go there to find out about the process and receive advice.
A “bet” of the company for the territory
The Councilor for Economic Promotion of the City Council, Manel Rodríguez, says that the objective is for people to find work and to reduce the unemployment rate in the region and in Figueres, which is around 10%. In this sense, the mayor, Jordi Masquef, assures that it is one of Amazon’s most important centers and a “big bet” that the company is making for the territory.
This, in his opinion, should help to close “the wheel” and make “a perfect squaring of the circle”. “Having a job means having a salary, purchasing power and then these people will be consumers of leisure and restaurants,” says Masquef. “We have always said that a job is better than a thousand subsidies,” adds the mayor. In addition, he points out that the ultimate goal is for people to find opportunities in the territory and not leave.
