In an assembly of Association of Teachers of the University of São Paulo (Adusp) held on Thursday 5th, the institution’s teachers decided to maintain the strike, aligned with the striking students.

The movement was started by students on September 21st, with the participation of academic centers and DCE-Livre.

Why are some USP professors and students on strike?

The strikers demand that the rectory hire more teachers, increase student stay assistance, improve structures at USP Leste, promote indigenous entrance exams and the appreciation of student rights.

With regard to hiring teachers, students demand the return of the automatic trigger for their hiring, the minimum number of 1683 educators to guarantee the functioning of the courses and the end of the call for excellence or merit.

According to a newspaper report The State of S. Paulo, the university has lost 800 professors in the last ten years.

The delay in replacing professionals caused a discrepancy in relation to the number of students. As a result, some colleges had to combine classes and dispense with the provision of subjects.

In the last week, colleges such as Poli, Medicine and units at USP and other cities joined the movement.

The strikers have barricaded the colleges, controlled access and barred teachers from entering the buildings. They claim that this is the only way to prevent the strike from being disrespected.

Negotiations progress

In a meeting held this Wednesday, 4th, between the Rectory of USP and a committee of ten members from academic centers and DCE-Livre, representatives of the general student strike, the institution’s board of directors committed to hiring 148 temporary teachers in 45 days.

The number is equivalent to professionals who retired last year. The vacancies would become effective later.

Despite the agreement, the students decided to continue with the strike, because other issues were not met.

A new meeting between them and the rectory is scheduled for next Monday, the 9th.

Adusp recognized the progress in the negotiations, but also argues that further progress can be made. They announced that they will monitor the students’ decision.

Movement does not represent all teachers and students

Yesterday, professors at the Largo São Francisco Law School released an open letter, in which they declared the impossibility of continuing to negotiate with students.

Therefore, they will promote the return to school in the format on-line.

The former president of the Largo São Francisco academic center and professor at the School of Communication and Arts (ECA) Eugênio Bucci also took a stance against the continuation of the strike in an article published in Estadão.

For Bucci, the strikers’ demands have already been met with the hiring of more teachers and an increase in scholarships for vulnerable students.
