Brighton held off the Reds this Sunday, during the eighth day of the English championship.
Liverpool were held up 2-2 at Brighton despite a double from Mohamed Salah on Sunday, a result which places the third in the Premier League three points behind Tottenham, leader pending the Arsenal-Manchester City clash on Sunday (5:30 p.m.). The Reds experienced another frustrating weekend, a week after the cruel 2-1 defeat conceded in added time to Tottenham, nine against eleven, with a goal wrongly refused by the refereeing body.
This time, they erased Simon Adingra’s opener (20th, 1-0) with a goal from Salah (40th, 1-1) then a penalty converted by the Egyptian striker (45th+1, 2-1 ), before being caught by a goal from captain Lewis Dunk (78th, 2-2) on a set piece.
Liverpool has 17 points after eight days, one less than second in the Premier League standings, Manchester City, and as many as fourth-placed Arsenal, two teams who face each other late this afternoon in London. Brighton are sixth, tied on points with fifth Aston Villa, credited with a 1-1 draw at Wolverhampton. Pau Torres (55th) gave his team the point, two minutes after the locals opened the scoring by Hwang Hee-chan (53rd).
No winner between West Ham and Newcastle
For its part, West Ham will spend the international break in seventh place, two points behind the “Seagulls”, and one point ahead of eighth Newcastle, which it held 2-2 on Sunday.
Newcastle were close to a second significant victory, four days after their major performance against Paris Saint-Germain (4-1) in the Champions League, but the Hammers equalized in the 89th minute through Mohammed Kudus.
